Tools for Living

For some people with pre-existing trauma, practicing mindfulness meditation can trigger PTSD symptoms like emotional overwhelm. If you have any concerns about this you are advised to check in with the teacher in advance for guidance, or not take the class.

Why this course?
For the last decade, I have been practicing secular buddism and yoga. Since the pandemic, grief and the unexpected have been regular visitors and I often found myself drowning in emotions with reactivity and looking for ways to escape the uncomfortable. Returning to a mindfulness practice has helped me develop better skills for navigating what seems impossible to walk through in my daily life and learn, as an empath, how to be with the sufferings of the world. For the last 2 years I have been training in Tara Brach and Jack Kornfeld’s Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, (MMTCP). This course has helped me to expand my teaching capacity and grown my own practice. While I do not consider myself a seasoned teacher, I offer this course from the heart. The Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Course is given in order to complete my certification program with MMTCP.

What We Will EXPLORE

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

    Week 1

    What is Mindfulness?

We will explore the benefits of meditation, the four aspects of a mindfulness practice, and how a practice can be a support for meeting the suffering of the world.

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and half circle lines.

    Week 2

    Being Fully Human

We will explore working with emotions through an introduction to the RAIN practice. This can support skillfully navigating life’s highs and lows and the importance of learning your window of tolerance when it’s hard to be with your emotions.

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and circle lines.

    Week 3

    The Wise Heart

We will explore what it is like to practice at this time. Are there any personal or collective sufferings present-societal injustice, climate change-and acknowledge them. This is followed by a guided heart practice. We will talk about loving kindness (Metta), compassion, joy, and equinimity in the context of our community today.

  • Geometric drawing of an outline square with sections divided by vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines.

    Week 4

Bringing your Practice into the World

We will explore the practices offered over the last four weeks. How might you hold your practice with conscious intention and inspiring vision to benefit all so you may, in your own small way, address the pain, and suffering in this world as an agent of consciousness?
